The Evolution of Virtual Reality:

As someone who has worked in the digital industry for the last 7 years, I have always been fascinated with emerging tech, especially the likes of virtual reality (VR). Since its inception, VR has opened our eyes to what is possible with technology. VR lets us think well beyond the human experience and immerses us in a digital world that almost feels real. It takes us to places we have always wanted to go and helps to provide solutions to industry challenges like never before.

In understanding the history of virtual reality, it is important to see how far we have progressed. Today, we are witnessing a resurgence in VR, despite its fair share of ups and downs. In 1968, Ivan Sutherland introduced the VA to what is commonly considered the first head-mounted augmented reality display, known as “The Sword of Damocles.” This groundbreaking invention laid the foundation for the VR devices we use today. Over the decades, tech advancements have accelerated the development of VR. In the 1980s and 1990s, companies like Sega and Nintendo developed VR gaming systems, generally with limited success. It was not until the 2010s when companies like Oculus and HTC introduced high-quality VR headsets that leveraged powerful graphics and motion tracking technology, essentially evolving virtual reality.

Imagine a world where you can become the protagonist of your favorite movie or TV show. Instead of using streaming services to watch a movie, what if you could participate in the storyline and play the role of the main character? If technological growth continues at its current rate, it’s easy to imagine that one day, not that far into the future, we will be able to fully immerse ourselves in just about any virtual world we would like.

In 2018, the global box office for the film industry was worth $41.7 billion, while the revenue of the gaming industry in the US alone generated a record $43.4 billion. However, when including box office and home entertainment revenue, the global film industry was worth $136 billion. Job security in acting has hit a whole new level of difficulty when the cost of CGI is lower than the cost of hiring professional actors.

We’ve heard rumors circulating through the city. Fortunately for actors, computer-generated imagery is still in the uncanny valley. Or does this technology advance with the integration of artificial intelligence? One of the first white-collar job casualties may be the profession of acting. One might argue about the ethical implications of living in such a world. Production companies will be financially incentivized to produce digital art without having to budget a huge paycheck to their human superstars. Instead, they will be able to use AI that never needs a break, works 24 hours a day, and does all its stunts inside a computer simulation.

Arguing that this is far into the future is not compelling. As the growth of information technology continues, we are not hardwired to grasp exponential growth. Thus, we tend to spend our time making non-sequitur arguments about this issue. But we ought to spend our time trying to improve the system so that the economic repercussions are not grave. For certain occupations like acting, obviously, enormous changes like this would not happen overnight. And certainly, actors are getting paid for their gigs in the gaming industry as well. It’s reasonable to expect that this will only increase in the future as demand for higher quality gaming graphics is fueling the growth of the industry.

In May 2020, Epic Games, the American video game and software developer and publisher, revealed the latest game engine called Unreal Engine 5, which supports all existing systems, including the next-gen consoles PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. The goal of Unreal Engine 5 was to make it as easy as possible for developers to create detailed game worlds without having to spend excessive time on creating new detailed assets, allowing the engine to take care of these problems. It’s simply breathtaking when you realize the progression of in-game graphics went from this to this, and it will only get better if technological growth and innovation continue. It stands to reason that the time it takes to go from the graphics shown on Unreal Engine 5 to indistinguishable from reality graphics is far less than it took to go from the 1972 Pong game to the Unreal Engine 5 demo.

Of course, right now, video games have the edge over VR when it comes to graphics and market value. But as far as virtual reality is concerned, graphics are only one component to achieve a full, in-depth immersive experience. While it’s true that we are primarily visual creatures, our other senses will have to be included as well in order to emulate just about any real experience we can possibly have. The next big thing in VR software and hardware developers need to concur besides audio-visual is the sense of touch. There are countless virtual reality-based companies focusing on developing sophisticated tactile technology with a variety of solutions, such as Avatar VR, Hi-5 VR Glove, VR Free, HapX, Extra Robotics with their Ex-Mo haptic force feedback glove, etc.

VR games like Blown, Echoed, Undead Citadel, Medal of Honor, Half-Life: Alyx, etc., are expected to push the VR market forward. When the official gameplay trailer for Star Wars Squadron came out, people outside the VR community started to see the potential the virtual world has to offer. But as good as these games may look today in 2025, we will most likely look back and wonder why we were impressed by them. It’s fascinating how fast we adopt a dismissive attitude towards older technology once it gets replaced with a new, better one. However, being mindful of this bias, even if haptic feedback and VR graphics are polished by tomorrow, the VR experience still has a major obstacle to overcome: locomotion. Some people feel motion sickness when using common locomotion methods such as joystick walking or even teleportation, which is, according to most users of VR, the worst way to move around from place to place in virtual reality.

To get closer to a place like the Oasis in the movie Ready Player One, we need to solve this problem. One solution, just like in the movie, is to make use of omnidirectional treadmills. Kat VR, the China-based VR tech company, came up with a customer-centered VR treadmill called Catwalk C. The $100,000 crowdfunding campaign goal was reached within three minutes and surpassed $1 million in less than a day. Presenting Catwalk C: your first personal VR treadmill. The personal VR treadmill offers a range of motions such as running, moving backward, strafing, crouching, etc. Who’d have thought that gameplay for once would help you fight obesity instead of intensifying it?

A 2025 version of VR, with graphics, haptic feedback gloves, full VR bodysuits such as the Tesla suit, and an omnidirectional VR treadmill like Catwalk C, will make the virtual experience become as close to a sci-fi movie as we can imagine. But first, the pricing of all these features has to go down, and that’s when VR will eventually become mainstream, which is to say, owning a VR headset and all the rest becomes as casual as owning a cell phone.

By 2025, the virtual reality industry is predicted to reach close to $88 billion. Although the entertainment business, such as the gaming industry, is a major component driving the VR market and technology forward, it’s certainly not the only one. Education will also play a key role in propelling virtual reality to its full potential. As VR tech improves, just like the gaming industry, seemingly non-related fields may start to converge.

In the distant future, even jobs that require physical presence may be performed through a VR gear, operating a robot connected to the employer’s network. As AI and self-driving vehicles start to become the norm, the time for a car or airplane can be used much more productively with VR. Basically, every relevant field in our lives will be improved and transformed through virtual reality technology.

Due to advances in technology, the manufacturing industry has gone through a drastic transformation over the years. The emergence of Industry 4.0, digital twin, and AI has given wide space for virtual reality applications in the manufacturing industry. Product designing, worker safety, and quality control have been positively influenced by virtual reality.

There is a growing demand from manufacturers for minimizing operational costs, increasing automation, predictive maintenance, and quality control. This drives the demand for VR applications in the manufacturing industry. Many manufacturers are leveraging the benefits of virtual reality applications in manufacturing processes.

The adoption of virtual reality in manufacturing has given lucrative market opportunities to the key players. The rising popularity of smart factories, industrial robots, have offered a comprehensive platform for the application of VR in the manufacturing industry. Technical positions such as control engineers, technicians, skilled operators, and others have been specially trained to use VR applications with the aim of improving productivity.

Furthermore, the ability of VR to provide immersive experiences, 360-degree content view, high simulation environment, and actionable analytical insights have driven the interest of manufacturers to adopt virtual reality in manufacturing.

Creating Augmented and Virtual Reality Applications

To start, we all know that augmented and virtual reality are going to be integral parts of near-future technology, and many consumer-level AR and VR devices are emerging in the market. While AR and VR devices are becoming cheaper and easier to access, most of the people involved in authoring AR and VR devices so far have been professional developers engaged mostly in industry-level projects. However, currently, the door is opening for many non-professionals, and they are increasingly tinkering with AR and VR applications. For example, artists are using augmented reality to create art installations, teachers are using AR and VR to convey complex ideas in their classes, and architects are using AR and VR to gain a better sense of their designs through virtual visualization.

At present, there is a rich body of research available in the HCI community about AR and VR creation, exploring different ways to ease the creation process. However, the current problem is that we know relatively little about non-professional AR and VR creators’ approaches to the learning process and where they face barriers during their design and development activities. In this study, our focus was on understanding what processes non-professional AR and VR creators currently use and how they differ from other kinds of interaction design and development, such as mobile and web development. We also wanted to understand the challenges non-professional creators face when working on AR and VR projects.

To answer these questions, we decided to apply a qualitative approach by conducting semi-structured interviews with 21 non-professional AR and VR creators. After analyzing our data and obtaining the results of our study, three groups of creators emerged: user experience and user interface designers, domain experts (mostly researchers and subject matter experts), and hobbyists (working on personal or gaming-related projects).

In our paper, we synthesized eight key barriers described by our non-professional AR and VR creators, ranging from understanding the initial landscape of authoring tools to designing, prototyping, implementing, debugging, and user testing AR and VR experiences.

First, we found a lack of understanding around where to start and what to look for when beginning the AR and VR creation process. Creating an AR or VR application involves choosing a head-mounted display, prototyping, making 3D models, learning 3D modeling software, mastering different programming languages, and ensuring compatibility with the computer being used. Additionally, compared to other mediums like mobile development, AR and VR development lack concrete design guidelines and examples, which posed a significant challenge for hobbyists and domain experts, as well as UX designers.

Secondly, every stage in the design had its own user-centered design challenges for our creators. While some skipped the prototyping and testing steps, others faced difficulties in prototyping and user testing, especially in designing for 3D experiences. UX designers experienced challenges in designing user interfaces for different scenarios and controlling user fatigue and simulator sickness.

Lastly, creators faced challenges dealing with constant changes in AR and VR technologies and a lack of relevant support. Changes in hardware often left creators behind and made their creations unsupported, leading to frustrations and uncertainties.

Current Challenges, Practices, and Opportunities

Creating AR/VR applications still requires significant technical skill and knowledge and is therefore difficult to adopt. Current research in HCI is focused on lowering the entry hurdles for non-technicians by investigating authoring tools that require less to no coding skills. However, little is known about the situation for experienced professionals in this field. For them, the fusion of multiple disciplines, skills, motivations, and platforms results in a fragmented environment of vocabulary, tools, methods, and approaches. We contribute to the field by providing empirical insights into the authoring process of professional development teams and highlight three main challenges for collaborative AR and VR application creation. Finally, we introduce design implications for tools supporting such work by taking a practitioner-centered approach.

For our study, we followed a qualitative approach and conducted semi-structured interviews using online video conferencing tools. Our aim was to sample a diverse group of participants regarding their background, application area, target devices, and local distribution. We finally recruited 26 participants with different roles in the development process. Based on their skill set, we grouped them as follows: Creators with design skills, creators with coding skills, creators with both design and coding skills, and managers. All of our participants were actively working on AR/VR application creation.

We designed our questions to investigate the full process of developing an application – ranging from planning, preparation, and execution to evaluation and transfer. We further asked about their tasks, tools, methods, devices, challenges, and workarounds in addition to their experience in classical 2D design and development. For the analysis, we adopted an open coding approach. In addition to the three key challenges which I am going to focus on in the next slide, we also distilled four roles based on the reported tasks and activities. Details about those roles can be found in the paper.

AR/VR has a unique set of challenges for creators due to the three-dimensionality and novelty of the medium. The three key challenges we identified are as follows: First, team-internal misconceptions about the medium. Those originate from an overestimation of hardware and software capabilities. The teams cope with that issue by creating awareness about limitations during demonstration and experience sessions. Hereby, they use artifacts like working applications or mood boards. Second, lack of tool support and appropriate methods.

This leads to the creation of inaccessible prototypes for designers and developers with non-overlapping skill sets but may also result in prototypes becoming the final products. Teams approach this issue, for instance, by teaching each other’s tools or explaining concepts using diagrams, sketches, wireframes, and sometimes physical prototypes. Third, the absence of a common language. This causes problems in describing system behavior and design ideas. Reported workarounds were joined prototyping sessions and the creation of interactive artifacts, such as video clips and animations.

Based on our findings, we elicited five implications for future methods and tools, of which I want to highlight the potential of drawing from already existing methods, approaches, and workarounds. Since AR/VR creation unifies several disciplines and design approaches, it might be beneficial to try out methods and tools from other disciplines, such as filmography, architecture, and game design. In conclusion, we hope that future authoring tools will provide opportunities for creators to start easily while being able to handle more complex interactions within the same tool. With a warm welcome, let’s delve into the video. In the last few decades, technology has been at its peak in information and IT. Technologies including cloud computing, machine learning, artificial intelligence, deep learning, big data, and many more have occupied most aspects of our lives. One such technology is AR and VR.

As part of today’s schedule, we will be looking at what VR and AR technology is, followed by its real-world applications. Then we’ll head towards the vital part of this module, which is VR versus AR, and further discuss its advantages and disadvantages. At the end, we’ll explore its real-world implementation in modern days.

First, we’ll look at what VR technology is. VR stands for virtual reality, where users immerse themselves in a specifically designed or simulated environment for a specific purpose. For example, medical training, games, etc., are explored without borders and boundaries in 360 degrees.

Now, let’s explore the applications of VR. In education, conducting academic activities like field trips, visits to museums, and historical eras is now easy via VR. In healthcare, analysis and research on medical terms via VR have taken medicine practitioners to the next level. Real-time experience of fictional characters or sci-fi movies, animations, and motions can be experienced by all with the use of VR in the field of entertainment.

Prototyping cars help the automotive industry avoid multiple designs and reduce resources to the maximum via virtual designs using VR. In terms of defense, VR helps brave men experience battlefield environments in real-time to avoid unconditional situations in reality. Towards marketing, VR promotes products where consumers can look and feel the product in real-time via a 360-degree view, which helps in better marketing.

Now, let’s move towards AR. AR stands for augmented reality, which adds digital content in a real physical world without any difference in overall aspects of the content. For example, consider adding a sofa in a small space, where you can place a digital sofa in the same space to check the look and feel without any difference in its position, placement, etc.

We have discussed VR and its applications; now let’s move towards the applications of AR. Unlike VR, AR has its applicative fields, including the use of AR glasses, medical systems for medical imaging, entertainment, tourism, education, designing, and modeling.

So far, we have discussed VR and AR technologies and their applications; now let’s move towards the most important part of the module, which is VR versus AR. In the comparison of VR and AR, VR is completely virtual with its environment, while AR uses real-world entities, a combination of both virtual and real elements.

Next, VR users are controlled by the system, as the syncing of the environment plays a major role in real-time, whereas AR users can control their presence in the real world. VR requires compatible devices like a headset device, while AR is accessible right from your smartphone. VR only enhances a fictional reality, as it is composed of a specifically designed environment, whereas AR enhances both virtual and real-world environments.

Moving on to the advantages and disadvantages of VR and AR technology, when it comes to AR, it is more advantageous, as educating oneself with real hands-on experience increases user knowledge. AR is everywhere today, from Google Maps to simulation games, including knowledge and user experience. Sharing knowledge and experience without physical hindrances like distance, physical element presence, etc., is facilitated by AR. AR is an inexpensive alternative to other media platforms.

To talk about VR, virtual reality in every field makes the process easy and comfortable. For example, medical training eliminates the need for a natural element. With VR, users can experiment with artificial environments, eliminating boundaries and the need for an actual workspace. VR is composed of a specifically designed environment to avoid misuse of user information, avoid data loss, and maintain their privacy.

To talk about the disadvantages, first, we’ll have a look at AR. AR is quite expensive, making it less accessible for use. It can lead to use in inappropriate situations, causing harm, as it’s quite common to access right from a smartphone. AR technology is not equipped with security policies; intruders can hack AR-based devices and manipulate them according to their needs.

In terms of VR, any technology in its early stages makes it feel not easy, and the same is the case with VR. Due to its rapid growth, programmers find it difficult and search for ways to interact with virtual environments. Maximum use of VR makes one addicted to living in the virtual world instead of the real one. VR software also takes up a lot of space and requires a lot of computing power compared to other devices.

Now, let’s address a question: Are AR and VR booming in the industry? The answer is no. In addition to AR and VR, there exist other reality technologies like MR, which stands for mixed reality, and XR, which is known as extended reality, which exist in the modern world. Mixed reality takes all these user experiences to the next level with a combination of holographic models and real-world scenarios.

Moving ahead towards XR or extended reality, it is the combination of all the led technologies, including AR, VR, and MR. For example, a mobile chipset can be used both to track your health and power graphics for gaming.

Now, let’s discuss the implementation of AR and VR technologies. Our company is using and hiring AR and VR; the answer is obviously yes. These technologies are a part of our daily lives, included as a part of social media, artificial intelligence companies like Microsoft, the hologram environment can be used with HoloLens to project to display information.

They can also help blend with the real world or even simulate virtual objects. Google uses AR in its products like Google Maps, Google Lens, and many more to simulate search results. Automotive industries like BMW, Volkswagen, and Mercedes-Benz use AR featuring fully automated cars controlled via gestures and voice control.

We have now reached the end of this module. In today’s module, we have discussed the need for reality technologies, including AR and VR technology, the applications, and a comparison of VR and AR. As time evolves, the need for new technologies and their use and growth increases, but we should choose the right one that suits our needs in all aspects, leaving no harm and increasing knowledge and productivity.

Applications Across Industries

We are still on “Tech for Everyone.” So “Tech for Everyone” is a platform, is a segment of API codes, where we’ll be explaining the basic concepts and things around computers and computer science so everybody can actually benefit from it. We previously have been talking about APIs, integration, programming, documentations, but this time around, I’ve actually come down to look at beginners’ sections of computer science and computers. So this section, we call it “Tech for Everyone.” And before we go and dive right into it, we’ll be talking about our documentation. We got this lecture from Tutorial Points, so this is an acknowledgment to them, and kudos to them for preparing such a very nice lecture for application of computer. So let’s dive straight into it.

So, what are the applications of computers? Now, in business, we’re going to look at breaking it down into different parts, different fields. Now, let’s look at business, for example. Now, computers’ high-speed calculation, accuracy, reliability, as a facility, has actually helped in business. Now, it helped in payroll calculation, budgeting, sales analysis. Now, when you actually make sales, you actually use a computer to give a form of focus to your financials and see whether the sales and your customer reaction. You’re going to use sentiment analysis, several types of analysis, data analysis made by computers to be able to know how you can go about your sales to get better results. So, that’s what computers help to do. It also helps in managing data, employees’ database, financial payments, managing of stocks, inventories, and several things. So, you can actually use computers to make your business better and faster.

Now, let’s move on to the next one. In banking, this is very, very important in our daily lives. You make payments, so banking is very complex. So, computers make it very easy managing accounts for over 5 million, 10 million, 50 million, 20 million people. How are you going to do it as a human? So, we need computers to be able to make it faster, make it better, make it easier for us. We have automated machines that actually disburse money to people on the go just by slotting your card. A transmission is made from your card to the bank server, and from the bank server, it’s back to the machine, and money is disbursed. So, it’s making life totally easy.

Now, let’s move on to insurance. So, insurance policies are things that can be documented with the help of a computer. It makes it easy to be able to track payments, track interest, track benefits, bonus, and everything. This has made it easy. So, we don’t have to go about looking at piles and piles of paper or books to be able to get somebody’s track record. It makes it very easy and fast to do that.

Now, let’s move on to education. Currently, this is actually an educative platform. So, this educative platform is what you can access with the help of a computer and the internet. So, with this platform, you can actually learn a lot of things. You can go to YouTube, you can go to Tutorial Points, where we got this lecture that we’re explaining like this. So, you can actually use it to do some complex calculations. You can use it to make research. So, computers have provided very fast implementation purposes in the education field. And it gives us a huge database to track performance of students and also performance of data and information provided.

Let’s continue. So, look at marketing. Marketing has been made very easy with the use of computers. We have digital marketing, social media marketing, several aspects of marketing, endorsement, and everything has been made very enterprise. Businesses have been made to be very easy with computers. So, you can shop online, advertise your product from the comfort of your homes. You can advertise, do advertisement, and several things. You can make it easy to make payments from your customers to you, and everything makes it so seamless with the help of computers.

Another one is health. This is very, very important because health is wealth. So, we can perform things like ECG, EEG, ultrasound, CT scans, diagnostic systems, lab, so all these things have been modernized with the help of computers. And recently, I think there was a news I heard some time ago where surgeries were made with the help of a computer. So, let’s look at surgery, the help of computers. So, let’s see what we have on Google. Yeah, computer-assisted surgery. It’s the use of computer to manipulate data for planning, performing, and assessing surgery. So, meaning that computers have actually helped, actually assisted in making surgeries better than before.

Now, in pharmacy too, yes, you can use it to track expiry date of drugs, side effects, drug labels, so it has made it easier to be able to check inventory, your pharmacy. You get now, so that’s for healthcare. We also have engineering. This is a very, very important aspect because we have computer-aided design. So, you can build a prototype on your system, showing all the features that your original engineering is building. You have in future, and from there, you can actually perform some analysis, some things on it, and know how it will perform with respect to the planned implementation. You get now. You can use it to test materials and equipment to know how durable they are before you actually implement them for users to make use of.

In planning, designing buildings, both in 2D and 3D drawings. So, in architectural designs, computers have been used in architectural designs too. So, let’s go down to the next one. In the military, this is a very important aspect as computers have been used to form very high

Gaming Industry

Let’s talk about the gaming industry. Hundreds of millions of people around the world will be unboxing video games and downloading new updates this week, adding billions of dollars to an industry that’s already richer than both the global box office and the music business combined. But the huge success of video games has come at a cost to many people who make them. So what’s happening to the workers behind the screen?

It’s pretty incredible, really, just how massive this industry is and how much it’s evolved over the decades.

This was Nimatron, the very first game machine that debuted in New York in 1940. Fast forward to the arcade games of the 70s, home gaming consoles, computer games in the 80s and 90s, online gaming at the turn of the century, and now mobile gaming and e-sports where full-time, professional gamers fill stadiums and earn millions, yes, millions of dollars.

Let’s wrap our heads around some numbers. In 2016, a third of the world’s population were video gaming – that’s two and a half billion people. In 2017, more than 660 million people watched other people play video games on platforms like Twitch and YouTube. In 2018, the gaming industry made at least 130 billion dollars. And this is a business that’s still growing by about 10 percent a year. That’s a pretty exciting industry for aspiring animators, developers, and coders to want to be part of. And staff salaries for developers are a lot higher than your average job. In the US, a developer can earn around $100,000 a year. In India, it’s about 500,000 rupees or $6,000 a year – a lot higher than the average person’s $2,000 yearly salary.

You know, I am so glad I got into game design – it’s cool to be able to create the kind of games that we play. And 2019 was the year we found out just how big a price people pay to be part of the world’s biggest entertainment industry.

Crunch culture is still a huge issue in the industry. It’s when workers are put under enormous pressure to work overtime in order to meet game launch deadlines. Before the studio Treyarch released “Call of Duty: Black Ops 4” last year, some testers said that “crunch time” involved working 70 hours a week for weeks on end. The gaming website Kotaku says some of those guys earned only 13 dollars an hour, while Black Ops made about 500 million dollars in just a few days. “This multiplayer mode is super fun, dude.” Some testers working on Fortnite, another massive and free online game, also reported 70-hour working weeks. And what happens a lot is that after a launch, many workers are laid off.

Kevin just mentioned women and they have major concerns about the gaming work culture. As many as a billion gamers are thought to be women and only 19% of the industry’s staff are female. Ever since the #MeToo movement, more and more women are coming forward with allegations of rape and harassment.

We spoke to one designer who even made a game about what it was like to be a woman in the industry.

In 2014, a scandal known as ‘Gamergate’ consumed the gaming world. It was a huge online culture war about a lot of things, but at the heart of it was the treatment of women in a male-dominated industry. At the time, a developer named Zoe Quinn and others received rape and death threats. So much so that even the FBI was called in to investigate. People like feminist media critic Anita Sarkeesian came under pretty heavy fire for posting this: extremely toxic, patronizing, and paternalistic attitudes about women. Workers have been trying to unionize to demand things like better pay and fair treatment by gaming studios. But it’s not been easy.

That conference triggered an online movement called #GameWorkersUnite, and it’s now an international organization whose mission even has the backing of US presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders.

So is the industry doing anything right? Gaming studios, including Treyarch, which we spoke about earlier, say they are trying to reduce the crunch culture. The GameWorkersUnite movement has formally been accepted into the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain. And some companies like Blizzard Entertainment and EA also made Glassdoor’s 100 best US companies to work for in 2018, although EA fell off that list in 2019.

For consumers and developers, there’s a lot to look forward to, and the hope is that as this industry grows and rakes in billions more, gaming workers will reap the benefits of a business that at the heart of it, is meant to be about fun.

Education and Training Industry

The education and training career cluster focuses on the activities, resources, and locations that provide all kinds of learning services. It includes public and private schools at every level, from pre-K through high school, as well as colleges and universities. Libraries, museums, and corporate training services are also part of this cluster.

Public education is guided by a combination of sources: federal and state departments of education, along with school boards elected by the public, all shape the policies schools operate under and the requirements for what schools must teach. Quick facts to know: There are about 10 million jobs in the education and training cluster, with average growth in new jobs expected. The U.S. has about 56 million students in public and private schools. Around 4 million college degrees, from associate’s through graduate level, are awarded annually. Overall, education requirements are highest for occupations in this cluster of all career clusters; however, salaries are about 25% higher than for occupations in general. Increases in student enrollment are expected over the next ten years from elementary school through college, triggering increased demand for educators at all levels.

This is Industry Wednesday. Every Wednesday, we analyze a different industry. Today, we’re looking at 15 things you didn’t know about the retail industry. Today, we’ll talk about something that has an ancient history but still has an impact on people today: the retail industry.

By retail, we understand that customer goods and services are sold through multiple channels of distribution in order to earn a profit. The history of the retail industry started in antiquity, and over the centuries, the retail stores have evolved into what we know today as malls and shopping centers. Nowadays, the retail industry has developed a strategic part in which retailers plan everything and use the marketing mix to better understand the needs of their customers and to advertise their products and services better. Because of the popularity of social media, retailers started to sell their goods online to reach more and more customers. But let’s learn about this industry in detail, shall we? Here are 15 things you didn’t know about the retail industry.

1. Brand loyalty is not dead.
The term brand loyalty is used to describe the inclinations of customers to favor one brand over another. Did you know that brand loyalty is actually all about the customers’ emotions and their attachment to the brand? This concept goes hand-in-hand with customer retention and profit. Brand loyalty is pretty diversified nowadays. Customers are firstly driven by their feelings and emotions. These are the elements that influence them to go back to the same company. But their purchases are based on the function of the products and services. Studies have shown that if brands can appeal to both categories, their retention rate for customers can reach up to 77%.

2. Concept stores are the future of brick-and-mortar stores.
We are living in a world in which we post every detail of our lives on social media. Therefore, online presence has become something really important, if not vital. Brick-and-mortar stores are being replaced with online stores and also concept stores. Nowadays, shopping is just as much about the experience, and lots of customers are paying more attention to the design of stores, the employees, the attitude of the brand, and other details that make or break the experience. But what’s a concept store, you might ask? Concept stores are really small shops that may have a limited stock of brands or just a single brand. They are very similar to specialty stores. These types of stores are based on the experience the customer has while buying the product or service and how it fits into their life. They sell a product but also the feeling that you get from that product, and it’s really working for them.

3. The Palais Royale was one of the most important marketplaces in Europe.
The Palais Royale opened in 1784 in Paris and was one of the most important marketplaces in Europe, as well as one of the oldest. The Palais Royale was made up of gardens, shops, and entertainment venues. 145 boutiques, cafés, salons, hair salons, bookshops, museums, refreshment kiosks, and two theaters gave life to the area. Products such as fine jewelry, furs, paintings, and furniture were sold there. The prices in the Palais Royale were amongst the first in Europe to become fixed, and systems like bartering were abandoned. The stores were dedicated to aristocracy, as they sold luxury items at quite steep prices. The middle class would still take a glimpse at the lifestyle and the goods they could not afford, as the shops had a wall made out of glass. Was this the beginning of window shopping? Because it sure sounds like it.

4. The paper bag was invented by a woman.
Margaret Eloise Knight, also called the most famous 19th-century woman, was a self-taught engineer and an amazing inventor. While working at the Columbia Paper Bag Company in 1868, Margaret invented a machine that folded and glued the brown paper bags so familiar to Americans nowadays and only seen in the movies by the rest of the world. She also invented a few other useful things for humanity, such as a safety device for the looms and mills, lid-removing pliers, a numbering machine, and some devices related to rotary engines. Moreover, Knight was the first woman to be awarded a US patent, and she was included into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2006. She was quite a remarkable woman, to say the least.

5. The retail industry is worth $33.5 trillion.
In 2017, retailers declared that they earned $33.5 trillion in sales. That is an absolutely astonishing sum. The number represents a 3.9 percent bump in sales from 2016, according to the US Census Bureau. Moreover, the National Retail Federation predicts growth between 3.8 percent and 4.4 percent in sales in 2018. They also project growth in online and other non-store sales, and that growth should be between 10 percent and 12 percent. It seems that online retailers are winning more and more on the current market. The CEO of the National Retail Federation, Matthew Shea, stated, “We anticipate that consumers are going to continue to boost the economy with that additional income that’s going to be showing up in their paychecks very soon.” He also declared, “The retail industry is continuously transforming.”

6. Fraud from employees, customers, and suppliers is still a problem.
The retail industry is a fast-growing industry, and obviously, when a lot of money and goods are involved, fraud becomes a problem. In 2016, the percentage of fraud in this industry was 1.07 percent, and in 2017, the rate reached 1.58 percent. Moreover, when merchandise goes missing, every employee in the retail chain is a suspect, from the driver of the truck in which the products were going to be delivered, to the store employees and the cashiers. An interesting fact is that dishonest employees are causing more money loss than shoplifters. And speaking of shoplifters, they love the self-checkout area in stores. Retailers and the police are still working on protecting the stores and brands from theft.

7. Abercrombie & Fitch used to have a lot of discriminatory policies.
Being the talk of the town and being voted to the top of lists is usually something to be proud of, but not in this case for Abercrombie & Fitch. The brand was voted the most hated brand in America in the 2016 American Customer Satisfaction Index. Moreover, Abercrombie and Fitch had the lowest score ever on the list. The retailer is well-known for its discriminatory policies. The brand released racist t-shirts, refused to employ non-white people, and banned certain employees from working in jobs related to customer interactions. The CEO of the brand, Mark Jeffries, stated they only hire good-looking people because beautiful people will attract customers from that demographic, also declaring that his brand is an exclusionary one.

8. Amazon buying Whole Foods is destroying big retailers.

Marketing Industry

Marketing – we hear about it a lot on social media, podcasts, YouTube, and blogs. Words like digital marketing, E-commerce, direct marketing, email marketing, social media marketing… so what exactly is it?

Well, if you look it up on Google, the definition is “the action or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising.” According to the American Marketing Association, marketing is “the act, set of institutions, and process of creating, communicating, delivering, and presenting an exchange of offers that have value for clients, co-partners, and society itself.” So, in layman’s terms, marketing is the process of communicating to clients and customers a solution to their problem. Basically, marketing is a way for you to show the value of your products or services to the right clients who could use them.

Now, there are two major types of marketing: traditional and modern. Traditional marketing is probably what you’d think of when you see a billboard on a highway, an ad on TV, or hear an advertisement on the radio. Traditional marketing is typically a “spray and pray” type of marketing, where you send out a message to millions of people, knowing full well that only maybe a few thousand or even less might be interested in your product. Oftentimes, the focus of traditional marketing is not so much getting sales but building brand awareness.

Traditional marketing is still incredibly important, but there are two major problems with it: one, it’s almost impossible for you to track your ROI or return on investment, and two, you’re typically paying to show your marketing to a bunch of people who absolutely don’t need to see it at all. And this is why over the last 20 years, with the rise of the internet and social media, you’ve seen a steady decline in traditional marketing and the rise of the second one we’re going to talk about, which is modern marketing.

Modern marketing focuses more on knowing what customers want and need and then delivering that exact product to them. The most common form of modern marketing is known as digital marketing. With digital marketing, you’re able to identify the exact customers that need your product and show your ads only to them. And then, you’re able to track your return on investment down to the dollar. Some common types of digital marketing are SEO or search engine optimization, SEM or search engine marketing, email marketing, social media marketing, and affiliate marketing.

As you can imagine, digital marketing is one of the most valuable skills that you can learn, whether you’re trying to be an employee, a freelancer, or own your own business. Healthcare Industry

Healthcare starts with the patient. We are all consumers in this industry from the moment we’re born, relying on it to keep us healthy throughout our lives. These medical services are provided by healthcare professionals, generally through hospitals, clinics, and other institutions. Collectively, these are known as healthcare providers.

In most industries, consumers pay the providers of goods and services directly, but not so in healthcare. Most healthcare spending paid to providers is done by either the government or by insurance companies, with a smaller portion coming directly from patients, called out-of-pocket payments. In the healthcare context, these entities are known as payers. The bulk of patients’ financial contribution to their healthcare comes from taxes or insurance premiums that go to the payers.

The final piece of the healthcare ecosystem is the companies that provide medical supplies, such as specialized equipment and pharmaceutical treatments. Medical suppliers and pharmaceuticals are each large industries of their own. These various groups – patients, providers, payers, suppliers, and pharmaceuticals – come together to form the healthcare ecosystem. It is a complex, heavily regulated space that is constantly evolving.

We will be covering it over a series of primers. This primer will be focused on healthcare providers, with a deep dive on the most comprehensive provider: the hospital. Over the next eight chapters, we’ll answer the following questions:

Medicine Industry

Let’s dive right in. Pharmaceutical manufacturers, also known as pharmaceutical companies and collectively referred to as the pharmaceutical industry, are entrepreneurs or companies that manufacture drugs. The spectrum of activities includes research and development for new active ingredients and dosage forms, the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, original preparations, or generics, and the placing on the market under one’s own name as a marketing authorization holder or as a co-distributor.

In general, pharmaceutical manufacturers can be divided into two groups: original and generic manufacturers. The original manufacturers, also referred to as research-based manufacturers, are characterized by pharmaceutical research and the development of new drugs. Original manufacturers usually specialize in selected indication areas in which they are market leaders. They typically invest heavily in branding and sales. Generic manufacturers, on the other hand, usually do not conduct any research but use active ingredients for which patent protection has already expired. Due to the low research and development costs, it is possible for generic drug manufacturers to offer drugs of the same quality at significantly lower prices than is possible for the researching manufacturers.

Most generic manufacturers appear on the market as full-range suppliers and offer as many different active ingredients as possible. But before investing money into it, you decide to draw up the differences between on-premise and Cloud Computing to make a better decision.

When it comes to scalability, you pay more for an on-premise setup and get fewer options too. Once you’ve scaled up, it is difficult to scale down and often leads to heavy losses in terms of infrastructure and maintenance costs. Cloud computing, on the other hand, allows you to pay only for how much you use, with much easier and faster provisions for scaling up or down.

Next, let’s talk about server storage. On-premise systems need a lot of space for their servers, notwithstanding the power and maintenance hassles that come with them. On the other hand, cloud computing solutions are offered by cloud service providers who manage and maintain the servers, saving you both money and space.

Then we have data security. On-premise systems offer less data security thanks to a complicated combination of physical and traditional IT security measures, whereas cloud computing systems offer much better security and let you avoid having to constantly monitor and manage security protocols. In the event that a data loss does occur, the chance for data recovery with on-premise setups is very small. In contrast, cloud computing systems have robust disaster recovery measures in place to ensure faster and easier data recovery.

Finally, we have maintenance. On-premises systems also require additional teams for hardware and software maintenance, loading up the costs by a considerable degree. Cloud computing systems, on the other hand, are maintained by the cloud service providers, reducing your costs and resource allocation substantially.

So now, thinking that cloud computing is a better option, you decide to take a closer look at what exactly cloud computing is. Imagine you’re traveling to work; you’ve got three options to choose from. One, you have buses which represent public clouds. In this case, the cloud infrastructure is available to the public over the internet, owned by cloud service providers. Two, then you have the option of using your own car; this represents the private cloud. With the private cloud, the cloud infrastructure is exclusively operated by a single organization, which can be managed by the organization or a third party. And finally, you have the option to hail a cab; this represents the hybrid cloud, a combination of the functionalities of both public and private clouds.

Next, let’s have a look at the service models. There are three major service models available: IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS. Compared to on-premise models, where you’ll need to manage and maintain every component, including applications, data, virtualization, and middleware, cloud computing service models are hassle-free.

IaaS refers to Infrastructure as a Service. It is a cloud service model where users get access to basic computing infrastructure, commonly used by IT administrators. If your organization requires resources like storage or virtual machines, IaaS is the model for you. You only have to manage the data, runtime, middleware, applications, and the OS, while the rest is handled by the cloud providers.

Next, we have PaaS or Platform as a Service, which provides cloud platforms and runtime environments for developing, testing, and managing applications. This service model enables users to deploy applications without the need to acquire, manage, and maintain the related architecture. If your organization is in need of a platform for creating software applications, PaaS is the model for you. PaaS only requires you to handle the applications and the data; the rest of the components like runtime, middleware, operating systems, servers, storage, and others are handled by the cloud service providers.

And finally, we have SaaS or Software as a Service, which involves cloud services for hosting and managing your software applications. Software and hardware requirements are satisfied by the vendors, so you don’t have to manage any of those aspects of the solution. If you’d rather not worry about the hassles of owning any IT equipment, the SaaS model would be the one to go with. With SaaS, the cloud service provider handles all components of the solution required by the organization.

Examples of Companies Using Cloud Computing

Amazon’s AWS (Amazon Web Services):
AWS offers IaaS and PaaS services to its customers. It’s popular for its Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), among other services like Elastic Beanstalk, Simple Storage Service (S3), and Relational Database Service (RDS).

iCloud:
Apple’s iCloud is primarily for Apple products, allowing users to backup and store multimedia and documents online, seamlessly integrating them onto all devices or apps.

Microsoft Azure:
Offered by Microsoft, Azure provides IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS for enterprise software and developer tools, including Office 365 products.

Google Cloud Platform:
Google’s cloud platform offers collaboration, data storage, and other services for its ecosystem and products like Microsoft Office

IBM SmartCloud:
IBM SmartCloud offers a full range of IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS cloud computing services to businesses, using private, public, and hybrid deployment models. Using a pay-as-you-go model, IBM SmartCloud generates revenue for IBM.

Deployment Models:

Let’s start by discussing the basic and most famous cloud deployment model, which is the public cloud. Please note that the diagram used here is a repeat of what was shown in the previous video of this very series, titled “Introduction to Cloud Computing.” The intent of that video was to introduce cloud computing to you with the help of how a public cloud looks like. Here, I have explained it in terms of the deployment model.

In this model, the infrastructure is hosted at cloud service providers’ physical boundaries and can be made available to, or basically can be shared by, multiple individuals and organizations, hence promoting multi-tenancy. Servers here are shared, making this model more cost-effective. This was a very initial model that was used and it hugely became popular. However, for large organizations who had certain data security, data privacy, jurisdiction, and other regulatory requirements, it still didn’t solve their problems.

Now, let’s move on to discussing the private cloud, which solves this problem for large organizations. A private cloud is one where an infrastructure is operated exclusively for an organization and is not shared with any other organization. There can be variants to this.

The first variant is when the servers, machines, or infrastructure is hosted within the physical boundaries of an organization for which the cloud is being set up. This is typically the organization’s data center. Here, a particular data center or a part of a data center that the organization owns can be dedicated to the cloud. This variant is popularly known as on-premise or simply on-prem.

The next variant to this is where the infrastructure, which is to be exclusively hosted and operated for an organization, is hosted on cloud service providers’ physical boundaries. This is known as off-premise. Only one organization will have access to this, even though it is not on their data center.

And finally, in terms of who operates both these types of setups, it can be the organization or the cloud service provider, which could be another two variants. Private cloud did solve the problem of data security and compliance but it didn’t fully utilize the benefits that cloud provides. Hence came the hybrid cloud, which is now the most popular one amongst large organizations and is also the way forward.

Simply put, a hybrid cloud is a combination of at least one public cloud and at least one private cloud. Here, the private cloud can be on-premise or off-premise. What’s shown in the diagram is a hybrid cloud that uses a combination of an on-premise private cloud and a public cloud.

So, how best can this model work for large organizations? Well, the best way is to use on-premise private cloud to keep applications and data that are core to the business of the organization and which have specific regulatory requirements. On the other hand, applications that are not closer to the core business and are generic in nature are good candidates for being hosted at the public cloud.

The next and final type of deployment model is the community cloud. This is a relatively newer and interesting model. Here, organizations with common requirements and interests share a cloud infrastructure. In terms of hosting and managing this cloud, there could be various combinations; it can be hosted or managed by one organization, a combination of organizations, or by cloud service providers themselves.

Considering the requirements and use cases, an example of where this type of model can work, and this is just a thought, is KYC. KYC is performed by banks during onboarding of a customer as well as periodically. There is a lot of duplicated efforts and costs that take place during this process. A community cloud can be an ideal place in the future to share such information across banks. Another example is various government agencies and bodies using this type of model to share data for better governance. In terms of costs, this model sits somewhere between a public cloud and a private cloud setup.

Benefits of Cloud Computing

Let’s discuss the concept of the six advantages of cloud computing, and this is their way of articulating the benefits of cloud computing in comparison to traditional operating models. It’s a big subject for the exam; it’s something that comes up in quite a few questions. So let’s go through these six advantages.

The first one is that you trade capital expense for variable expense. Remember, we talked before about how in the traditional model, you spend a lot of money buying equipment, paying for data centers. It’s a capital expenditure or capex, whereas in the cloud, you’re paying for your services in a pay-as-you-go model, and that’s an operational expenditure or opex. So rather than purchasing servers, you’re just paying for what you use.

Another advantage is that with capex, your expenses are tax-deductible over a depreciation lifetime, and that can be several years depending on your country, whereas with an opex model, your expenses are deductible in the same tax year.

The second advantage is that you get to benefit from massive economies of scale, and this image here just shows some of AWS’s thousands of customers, and you can see some of the biggest companies and the most well-known companies in the world just in this list. Because they have such a large customer base, they’re able to aggregate their usage across those customers. It means they’ve got purchasing power to lower their costs, and they pass that on to the customers. So that means a lower variable cost for you.

The third benefit is to stop guessing capacity. Now, if you’ve worked in IT, you know what I’m talking about here. In the beginning, when you’re planning a new workload, you often have an idea of what you need in terms of the amount of processing power, storage space, and so on. The reality is that often once you’ve deployed your workload, you find out what you really need, and it’s much less. So that means a lot of wasted resources. I used to work as a consultant going into customers, and I’d see this in every single customer there was, always wasted resources. With the cloud, we just don’t have this problem because we can actually adjust our capacity based on our demand.

The next benefit is speed and agility. Speed is the ability to deploy resources easily and quickly, and you can do so through API calls, through the command line, or through the management console. You can do so around the world as well. So you can not only deploy fast, but you can go global. Agility is the ability to react to change and bring things to market faster. So it means that in a competitive situation, you can respond to your customers’ needs better than your competitor because you have agility.

The next advantage is to stop spending money running and maintaining data centers. AWS wants you to stop spending your money and also your time maintaining data centers and instead put that time and that money into innovations. The way AWS sees it is that spending time and money on data centers is low value. It doesn’t differentiate your business. Whereas if you’re a bit more intelligent and you put that time and that money into new innovations, bringing new services to market, then that’s a way that you can differentiate your business and get a competitive edge.

Lastly, it’s going global in minutes. We’ve talked about this before. With AWS, you have the ability to deploy your resources all over the world. That used to be a very difficult thing to do, but now with cloud computing, it’s actually very easy. And we’ll see some examples of this later in the course. So those are the six advantages of cloud, and keep these in mind as you go through the course.

But it’s a lot more than just learning; it’s also about understanding and reasoning. So today, we will learn about the basics of Machine Learning Jobs.

So, that’s Paul. He loves listening to new songs. He either likes them or dislikes them. Paul decides this based on the song’s tempo, genre, intensity, and the gender of the voice. For simplicity, let’s just use tempo and intensity for now. Here, tempo is on the x-axis, ranging from relaxed to fast, whereas intensity is on the y-axis, ranging from light to soaring. We see that Paul likes the song with fast tempo and soaring intensity, while he dislikes the song with relaxed tempo and light intensity. So now we know Paul’s choices.

Let’s say Paul listens to a new song. Let’s name it as Song A. Song A has fast tempo and soaring intensity, so it lies somewhere here. Looking at the data, can you guess whether Paul will like the song or not? Correct. So, Paul likes this song. By looking at Paul’s past choices, we were able to classify the unknown song very easily, right?

Let’s say now Paul listens to another new song. Let’s label it as Song B. So, Song B lies somewhere here with medium tempo and medium intensity, neither relaxed nor fast, neither light nor soaring. Now, can you guess whether Paul likes it or not? Not able to guess whether Paul will like or dislike it? Are the choices unclear? Correct. We could easily classify Song A, but when the choice became complicated, as in the case of Song B, yes, and that’s where machine learning comes in.

Let’s see how. In the same example for Song B, if we draw a circle around the song B, we see that there are four votes for like, whereas one would for dislike. If we go for the majority votes, we can say that Paul will definitely like the song. That’s all. This was a basic machine learning algorithm. Also, it’s called K Nearest Neighbors. So, this is just a small example of one of the many machine learning algorithms.

Quite easy, right? Believe me, it is. But what happens when the choices become complicated, as in the case of Song B? That’s when machine learning comes in. It learns the data, builds the prediction model, and when the new data point comes in, it can easily predict for it. More the data, better the model, higher will be the accuracy.

There are many ways in which the machine learns. It could be either supervised learning, unsupervised learning, or reinforcement learning. Let’s first quickly understand supervised learning. Suppose your friend gives you one million coins of three different currencies, say one rupee, one euro, and one dirham. Each coin has different weights. For example, a coin of one rupee weighs three grams, one euro weighs seven grams, and one dirham weighs four grams. Your model will predict the currency of the coin.

Here, your weight becomes the feature of coins, while currency becomes the label. When you feed this data to the machine learning model, it learns which feature is associated with which label. For example, it will learn that if a coin is of 3 grams, it will be a one rupee coin. Let’s give a new coin to the machine. Based on the weight of the new coin, your model will predict the currency. Hence, supervised learning uses labeled data to train the model. Here, the machine knew the features of the object and also the labels associated with those features.

On this note, let’s move to unsupervised learning and see the difference. Suppose you have a cricket dataset of various players with their respective scores and wickets taken. When you feed this dataset to the machine, the machine identifies the pattern of player performance. So, it plots this data with the respective wickets on the x-axis, while runs on the y-axis. While looking at the data, you’ll clearly see that there are two clusters.

The one cluster is of the players who scored higher runs and took fewer wickets, while the other cluster is of the players who scored fewer runs but took many wickets. So here, we interpret these two clusters as batsmen and bowlers. The important point to note here is that there were no labels of batsmen and bowlers. Hence, learning with unlabeled data is unsupervised learning.

So, we saw supervised learning where the data was labeled and unsupervised learning where the data was unlabeled. And then, there is reinforcement learning, which is a reward-based learning, or we can say that it works on the principle of feedback. Here, let’s say you provide the system with an image of a dog and ask it to identify it. The system identifies it as a cat. So, you give negative feedback to the machine, saying that it’s a dog’s image. The machine will learn from the feedback, and finally, if it comes across any other image of a dog, it will be able to classify it correctly. That is reinforcement learning.

To generalize the machine learning model, let’s see a flowchart. Input is given to a machine learning model, which then gives the output according to the algorithm applied. If it’s right, we take the output as a final result; else, we provide feedback to the training model and ask it to predict until it learns. Everybody is online, either making a transaction or just surfing the internet, and that’s generating a huge amount of data every minute. And that data, my friend, is the key to analysis. Also, the memory handling capabilities of computers have largely increased, which helps them to process such a huge amount of data at hand without any delay. And yes, computers now have great computational powers. So, there are a lot of applications of machine learning out there.

To name a few, machine learning is used in healthcare where diagnostics are predicted for doctor’s review. The sentiment analysis that the tech giants are doing on social media is another interesting application of machine learning. Fraud detection in the finance sector and also to predict customer churn in the e-commerce sector. While booking a gap, you must have encountered surge pricing often, where it says the fare of your trip has been updated. Continue booking? “Yes, please, I’m getting late for the office.” Well, that’s an interesting machine learning model which is used by the global taxi giant Uber and others, where they have differential pricing in real-time based on demand, the number of cars available, bad weather, rush hour, etc.

AI vs Machine Learning

Artificial intelligence and machine learning—what’s the difference? Are they the same? Well, some people frame the question this way: it’s AI versus ML. Is that the right way to think of this? Or is it AI equals ML? Or is AI somehow something different than ML? So here are three equations. I wonder which one is going to be right?

Well, let’s talk about this. First of all, when we talk about AI, I think it’s important to come with definitions because a lot of people have different ideas of what this is. So, I’m going to assert the simple definition that AI is basically exceeding or matching the capabilities of a human. So, we’re trying to match the intelligence, whatever that means, and capabilities of a human subject. Now, what could that involve? There are a number of different things. For instance, one of them is the ability to discover, to find out new information.

Another is the ability to infer, to read in information from other sources that maybe have not been explicitly stated. And then also, the ability to reason, the ability to figure things out—I put this and this together and I come up with something else. So, I’m going to suggest to you this is what AI is, and that’s the definition we’ll use for this discussion.

Now, what kinds of things then would be involved if we were talking about doing machine learning? Well, machine learning, I’m going to put that over here, is basically a capability. Let’s start with a Venn diagram. Machine learning involves predictions or decisions based on data. Think about this as a very sophisticated form of statistical analysis. It’s looking for predictions based upon information that we have. So, the more we feed into the system, the more it’s able to give us accurate predictions and decisions based upon that data.

It’s something that learns—that’s the “L” part—rather than having to be programmed. When we program a system, I have to come up with all the code, and if I wanted to do something different, I have to go change the code and then get a different outcome. In the machine learning situation, what I’m doing could be adjusting some models but is different from programming. And mostly, it’s learning the more data that I give to it. So, it’s based on large amounts of information.

And there are a couple of different fields within a couple of different types. There is supervised machine learning, and as you might guess, there’s unsupervised machine learning. And the main difference, as the name implies, is one has more human oversight, looking at the training of the data using labels that are superimposed on the data. Unsupervised is kind of able to run more and find things that were not explicitly stated.

Okay, so that’s machine learning. It turns out that there’s a subfield of machine learning that we call Deep Learning. And what is deep learning? Well, this involves things like neural networks. Neural networks involve nodes and statistical relationships between those nodes to model the way that our minds work. And it’s called Deep because we’re doing multiple layers of those neural networks. Now, the interesting thing about deep learning is we can end up with some very interesting insights, but we might not always be able to tell how the system came up with that.

It doesn’t always show its work fully, so we could end up with some really interesting information not knowing in some cases how reliable that is because we don’t know exactly how it was derived. But it’s still a very important part of all of this realm that we’re dealing with. So, those are two areas, and you can see DL is a subset of ML.

But what about artificial intelligence? Where does that fit in the Venn diagram? I’m going to suggest to you it is the superset of ML, DL, and a bunch of other things. What could the other things be? Well, we can involve things like natural language processing. It could be vision, so we want a system that’s able to see.
