We’ve tested and simulated for millions of miles; well, it’s millions instead of billions, so it only gets you so far. Again, it’s good, but it’s not enough. We conform to safety standards; that’s great, but you need more than that. So what really happens is, to be safe, you sort of need all these things.

So what I’ve done is put together a hierarchy of safety needs. For those who remember their freshman psychology, this is Maslow’s hierarchy repurposed into autonomous vehicles’ safety. I’m calling out a higher “care” on purpose. I’m building it the same way, and the meaning is kind of the same.

Down at the bottom, we have basic driving functionality. If the AV cannot drive down the road without hitting something, that autonomous vehicle is going to have a problem. That’s sort of the table stakes, okay? But you also want defensive driving. It has to drive in a way that doesn’t get it into high-risk situations in the first place to achieve the level of safety that more mature human drivers have. Now, the thing about this pyramid is, you’re not on any one level. As you add levels, you have to do all the ones below, or you fall down to a lower level. So, by the time we’re done, you have to do everything here, not just one thing.

You need to do hazard analysis, the initial building block of safety engineering. Figure out what can go wrong, figure out ways to mitigate the hazard. You have to do functional safety (ISO 26262), which deals with internal faults. There are problems inside the system, and functional safety explains how to deal with those in a safe way. But there’s also safety the intended function, which has more to do with faults in the requirements and faults in the external world. Faults in your sensors aren’t going to be perfect; you’re going to lose the occasional radar pulse coming back and things like this. You also need to do that. You also need to do system safety; there are things other than driving safety. Driving is part of it, but there’s also securing the cargo and ensuring the passengers are in the right position. There’s a bunch of other things that have to do with the system and its context and how it interacts with other road users. Post-crash response, all sorts of things. And ISO/IEC 4600 takes that broader view and includes those on top of everything else.

Then there are social technical issues, stakeholder expectations, all those questions about what did you mean by safe. You have to answer all those questions; all those things have to be addressed. And at the top is a just culture for safety culture.

Now, you might ask, “Gee, shouldn’t you be doing just culture at the beginning?” So this is not a model of how to do it; I would say you have to start with a good safety culture. This is more a model of how I see companies building up from the bottom up. First, they try to get it to drive, then they get it to drive better, and then they add safety. This is kind of how companies behave, a hierarchy as opposed to an ideal. But eventually, all these things have to happen. And until you get the entire pyramid handled, you’re not really ready to deploy in a safe way.

Security also matters; security has its own pyramid that sort of shows up in the middle levels there. And this talk is not about security, but don’t forget security. That will have to happen as well. If you have a system that is insecure and people can corrupt the software images, that’s going to lead to safety problems as well.

Wrapping up, let’s go back all the way up to the big picture of how safe is safe enough. Well, you need to be safe enough to deploy, and that’s going to have to address the following factors:

By the way, don’t forget safety while you’re public road testing. SAE J3018 is a standard for public road testing safety that everyone should be following. And the decision to do road testing is also a kind of deployment decision. But in terms of deploying without a driver in the car, you have to realize that acceptable safety is more than just a risk number. It’s not just some number you pick out of the average fatalities per mile. You need a good baseline human driver to compare against that is apples to apples for your particular deployment. And you need to add a safety factor for unknowns because there will be unknowns. You also should be following safety and security industry engineering standards because that also helps you manage the risk of the unknowns.

You also need to address the ethical and stakeholder concerns. So it’s not just the number; you have to handle all these aspects of safety if you really want to be safe enough to deploy. This isn’t going to happen without a written safety case. You need a transparent argument based on evidence to get all this stuff straight. It’s not just driving around in a simulator, counting up how many crashes you had, and declaring the number good enough. You have to really think about all these factors and have something written down that other folks can understand so you can communicate why they should believe you’re safe enough to deploy.

You’re also going to need to do lifecycle uncertainty management via feedback. There will always be unknowns, and even if there aren’t unknowns, there will be. But even if there aren’t, the world’s going to change out from under you. So you’re going to need lifecycle feedback using safety performance indicators.

Back to the number one ethical issue: who decides when to deploy based on what is the number one ethical issue. And all the things above that line on this slide should be under consideration to decide when it’s time to deploy. The stakeholders, not just the people with financial interest in the company succeeding, but the other people sharing the road and their regulators. Everyone needs to be involved in setting the safety criteria and ideally making the decision because it may be the company with its investment on the line, but everyone else using the road is also being put at risk by this technology. It needs to be done thoughtfully, transparently, and with safety as top of mind.

The safety culture is the last piece. A strong safety culture means that if there’s a problem, people can say there’s a problem, and it will be resolved. That needs to be strong because otherwise, you’re not going to have fear dealing with all the stakeholders and making this decision. If you’re going to deploy, you need to deal with all these things to have a safe enough AV deployment.

Challenges and Regulatory Hurdles

The first thing we always hear is that robot taxis are not prone to human error, and therefore presumably they’ll be safer. That’s a big myth. It is true that they don’t make human error mistakes, but they make robot error mistakes instead. So, the question in the end is whether the robot errors are worse or better than comparable human driver errors, and we still don’t know yet.

Some of the robot errors that get made are things that it’s hard to imagine a normal, competent, unimpaired human driver making. For example, one incident involved not one but two robotaxis driving down a road with downed power lines, dragging the power lines down the road, including some emergency tape hooked onto their sensors on top. You would hope that a human driver would figure out pretty quickly that driving through emergency scene tape and dragging power lines hooked to your vehicle down the road is probably not a good idea. So, this is a kind of robot-style error.

Another issue that comes as somewhat of a surprise is they also make mistakes that look just like human errors. For example, there’s a robo-taxi that drove into wet concrete in what was said to be a reasonably well-marked construction area. Now, yes, human drivers make this mistake on occasion, but the promise was that these robot taxis would not make stupid human mistakes. And we have a bunch of incidents to show that’s not how it’s turning out on public roads.

We now know that the safety rhetoric of these things being here to save us and being perfect is not true. The question is, what’s really going on here, and how safe will they be? Let’s start with getting past some of the rhetoric. The reality is nobody knows when or even if autonomous vehicles will be safer than human drivers. When there are claims of reduced fatality rates, those are purely aspirational. Human drivers, while imperfect, are remarkably good at dealing with unexpected situations. Computers are terrible at that.

For many years, what the robot taxi industry would say was, “We’ll never hit something like a bus because our LiDAR will see it.” But that was graphically illustrated to be a false statement when a robotaxi actually hit a bus in San Francisco. So, we can’t say that just because they have good sensors they will never make a mistake. The reality is you cannot assume these vehicles will be safe; they have to be engineered to be safe, and that engineering is a lot of work and time.

Now, what does it mean by safe? The big narrative that the companies are pressing is reducing fatality rates. So, the industry will say we need to be at least as safe as a human driver on average. That should mean injuries as well as fatalities and potentially property damage as well. But the narrative always comes down to fatalities. In San Francisco, there’s about 100 million miles between fatalities on average. Safety is not only improving or at least meeting the average; it also means avoiding disproportionate risk on identifiable segments of the population.

Another thing to consider is public road testing safety. There is no such thing as driverless testing. When you take the safety driver out, you are done with safety-relevant testing because you’re not testing with a driver to intervene if something goes wrong.

Municipal preemption is another policy point to consider. Many states in the US right now have a municipal preemption clause in a state statute, which takes away locals’ ability to regulate their own streets. That’s turning out to be a real problem, as cities have no defense against companies coming in and testing if the state decides it’s okay. Municipalities should be given the flexibility to impose specific requirements in response to specific risks and hazards as needed to make sure things stay under control.

Overall, addressing these issues is crucial for the safe and effective deployment of automated vehicles on our roads.

Firefighters, for example, should be able to ask the city to ban Robo taxi operations within a couple of blocks of a fire response scene until that gets sorted out. They should not be at the mercy of the state to make those decisions; it takes too long, and the states don’t have the necessary local knowledge to be nimble and flexible in response. Municipalities also need to be able to enforce their own traffic laws. There needs to be a way for the state to provide that a police officer can give a robot taxi a ticket for running a red light. In some states, that’s not actually possible because the ticket is associated with a human driver, and if there’s no human driver, there’s no one to give a ticket to. So, those kinds of things need to be cleaned up.

The next policy point is that level 2+3 vehicles are actually a huge issue. They’re not being sufficiently addressed by legislatures at either the state or the federal level. These vehicles are already deployed on roads in large quantities, and we’re seeing fatalities and injuries due to driver complacency. The idea is when you turn on automated steering, the human driver has trouble paying attention. We’ve known this kind of thing is a problem for cars since the 90s; we’ve known that people are bad at paying attention to boring situations since the 1940s. This is not something that’s fixed by telling the driver to pay attention. This is fundamental to human nature; people are really bad at monitoring boring things, and that’s not going to change. Technologies such as driver monitoring may help with that, but simply telling drivers to get better and blaming drivers for crashes will not stop the crashes from happening.

And what do we do in regulation? Well, basically nothing. Every once in a while, there’s a recall for something that’s really egregious, but there are no regulations requiring these systems to be things that can be supervised by an ordinary human driver with good outcomes. And we’re seeing the consequences. In 2023, the stakes are being increased with the advent of so-called level 3 vehicles. These are ones where the driver is told by the manufacturer, you know what, it’s okay to look away from the road once you’ve pressed the on button and the system is engaged. So, in this case, it’s a low-speed traffic jam pilot, but level 3 in general is the driver does not have to pay attention at all while the feature is activated, but they have to be there to take over if the feature says, “Hey, I need you to take over now.” And what can the driver be doing? Well, here’s a picture.

This is a real thing that Mercedes-Benz is selling: the game of Tetris to play on the dashboard. So, you can actually play Tetris on the dashboard while the car is driving itself. Well, if that works and it’s safe, that’s really cool, it’s really great. But the question is, what’s the criminal liability if this vehicle, that driver playing a game on the dashboard, hits and kills someone? Now, it’s a highway; they’re not supposed to be people, but people show up on highways. There’s a crash scene, there’s all sorts of things that happen. What if this vehicle hits an emergency responder or a pedestrian and kills them? Who goes to jail? Who’s liable? Well, that’s an interesting question, and it’s not resolved.

Now, Mercedes-Benz says, “Oh, we take responsibility for the correct performance of our system.” But when push comes to shove and the reporters ask them for a written statement on that, what you get back is they’re talking about product liability. “Oh, we’ll stand behind our product liability.” But their statements don’t touch on criminal liability or even tort law. Who goes to jail? Who what happens in the wrongful death lawsuit? And so, at least in some states, the vehicle operator or the vehicle owner can be on the hook for these potentially very serious issues, and it’s a very unclear area of law right now that should be fixed before this technology deploys because who wants to be the driver who serves as the poster child for that kind of, “I don’t know what’s going to happen, let’s find out?” There needs to be a clear duty of responsibility for the computer driver.

There needs to be a concept of a computer driver that’s in charge of the car when the human’s been told it’s okay not to look at the road, and when the computer’s driving, the manufacturer should be responsible for tort law and for criminal law beyond product liability. There needs to be a defined nonzero safe harbor transition time so the computer says, “Hey, you got the ball now,” and the driver looks up and they’re about to hit someone, that that’s not automatically the driver’s fault. So, there needs to be several-second period, perhaps 10 seconds, where the driver is not at fault if they’re trying to get back into control of the vehicle because the vehicle told them to do so.

And it should also be the case that liability attaches to the manufacturer if there’s an inadequate driver monitor. People have trouble paying attention; the driver monitor should enforce the required level of attention. If you have driver monitoring theater or an inadequate driver monitor and the person’s not paying attention, the manufacturer needs to have some role in that. You can’t just blame the person because blaming the person won’t stop the next crash. I have a detailed proposal for state regulation on this co-authored with Professor Whalen from University of Miami School of Law, and those details are pointed to on a slide at the end of this presentation.

The next policy point is federal versus state regulation. Now, this is why it gets tricky. The feds regulate equipment; the states regulate drivers. But what if a computer driver is considered a piece of equipment? How does that sort out? This can get tangled, but there’s a proposal that’s fairly straightforward that sort of untangles this in a way that I think will not break things but is still useful and still results in safety. The first is NHTSA should still control equipment as they do now and the ability of the computer driver to adhere to state laws. So, there’s an ANPRM (advanced notice of proposed rulemaking) for an automated vehicle framework, and what it says is the companies should follow their own industry consensus safety standards to ensure safety. That’s been out for years; there are comments, and the comments have not been responded to yet.

That needs to move forward, and that will go a long way to fixing the federal half. But that’s about the equipment. The federal law should not say what the behavior needs to be. The feds shouldn’t be telling whether right turn on red happens all the time or none of the time; that should still be a state thing. So, they should control whether the computer driver can execute the applicable state laws, whatever those might be. The state should control the computer driver behavior. So, they should not be saying whether you need two computers or three computers in case one fails; that’s a NHTSA problem. But the state should be able to say that the computer driver has to be held to the same duty of care as a human driver, and that includes not breaking traffic laws, that includes not displaying reckless driving, and so on. So, the states can go after the behavioral aspects

Furthermore, as more driverless cars are introduced into the market, it is likely that the demand for traditional combustion engines will decrease, leading to a reduction in overall carbon emissions.

The benefits of driverless cars are clear, but there are also some concerns that need to be addressed. One of the main concerns is the potential loss of jobs in the transportation industry. However, it is worth noting that the introduction of driverless cars is likely to create new job opportunities in areas such as software engineering, data analysis, and maintenance. When we talk about clouds, let’s encompass both private and public clouds without distinction because, frankly, where we store and process data for tasks like aggregate analytics and trend analysis is still likely to be in the cloud, particularly in the hybrid cloud.

Now, network providers are also reconsidering the world of networking, their facilities, and how they can incorporate workloads into the network itself. They often refer to this as the network edge. Sometimes, you’ll hear the term “edge” used by network providers to denote their own network. 5G opens up opportunities for communication into the premises where work is performed, onto the factory floor, into distribution centers, warehouses, retail stores, banks, hotels—virtually anywhere. There’s an opportunity for us to introduce compute capacity into these environments and communicate with them through 5G networks.

There are two primary types of edge computing capabilities typically found in these environments: edge servers and edge devices. An edge server is essentially a piece of IT equipment, which could be a half rack containing four or eight blades or an industrial PC. Conversely, an edge device, fundamentally, is equipment built for a specific purpose, such as an assembly machine, a turbine engine, a robot, or a car. While these devices were primarily designed to fulfill their intended functions, they also happen to possess compute capacity. Over the past few years, many devices formerly referred to as IoT devices have evolved, boasting increased compute capacity. For instance, the average car today contains around 50 CPUs, while most new industrial equipment comes equipped with built-in compute capacity. These devices are becoming increasingly open, often running Linux and capable of deploying containerized workloads, thereby enabling tasks previously unfeasible.

Consider a scenario where a video camera is integrated into an assembly machine manufacturing metal boxes. By placing analytics on this camera, it can now inspect the quality of the machine’s output. Similarly, operating environments often feature edge servers—again, pieces of IT equipment—such as half racks situated on factory floors. These servers may be utilized for modeling production processes, monitoring production optimization, or ensuring efficient and high-yield production. Similar setups can be found in distribution centers, managing conveyor belts, stackers, and sorters. These environments provide ample opportunities for task execution.

Edge servers, being IT equipment, are typically larger in scale, allowing for the deployment of containerized workloads without the need for Kubernetes, though Kubernetes might still be utilized for its benefits in terms of elastic scale and high availability, particularly given that these servers often serve multiple edge devices.

With these considerations in mind, we can begin to contemplate what occurs in these environments and how we manage them to ensure that the right workloads are placed in the right locations at the right times. Firstly, we can leverage our cloud experiences, where containerization has become crucial for scaling, efficiency, and consistency. Secondly, as these environments are often designed for hybrid cloud scenarios, where hybrid cloud management is in place, we can repurpose these concepts for distributing containers into edge locations.

However, several challenges need addressing. Firstly, there’s the sheer volume of devices to manage. Estimates suggest there are currently around 15 billion edge devices in the market, with projections indicating a rise to approximately 55 billion by 2022 and potentially 150 billion by 2025. This implies that enterprises will need to manage tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands or millions, of devices from their central operations. Managing such vast numbers at scale necessitates management techniques capable of mass deployment without the need for individual administrators to assign workloads to individual devices.

Additionally, there’s the issue of diversity. Edge devices come in myriad forms, serving diverse purposes and making differing assumptions about their footprints, operating systems, and intended workloads. This diversity poses challenges for uniform management and security enforcement.

Speaking of security, edge devices exist beyond the confines of traditional IT data centers, lacking the protective measures typically associated with hybrid cloud environments. Consequently, securing these devices and the workloads they execute becomes paramount, requiring measures to prevent tampering, detect and respond to intrusions, and safeguard sensitive data.

Nevertheless, despite these challenges, the burgeoning field of edge computing promises substantial value. Just as mobile phones revolutionized consumer computing over the past decade, edge computing is poised to have a similarly transformative impact on enterprise computing. By navigating the complexities and addressing the inherent challenges, we can harness the full potential of edge computing, ushering in a new era of innovation and efficiency in the digital landscape.

Key Components of Edge Computing:

Basically, it’s going to be from sensors or cameras, sending to an Edge Gateway. This is an optional feature, but let’s say, for a fully autonomous car, it’s an example of an Edge Computing device. It connects to the cloud environment, but you don’t want your data to be sent at 100 km/h and then uploaded to the cloud for processing; the latency might not work by that time. So, in those extreme cases, or when going to be extreme sometime soon, it’s going to be regular; you want that processing to happen near the equipment. So, at least for those autonomous vehicles, they have Edge gateways where sensors could pre-compute that data, or with the help of Edge gateways, pre-compute there and then decide on their own, and then just submit Telemetry data to the cloud or Edge data centers.

This also makes it less work for Cloud environments and Edge data centers because they don’t have to pre-compute; they’re just waiting for the result of the processing that happened on the end device and point devices. But ultimately, they have a holistic view of the entire fleet, let’s say for autonomous vehicles, and they could make some business or operational decisions based on that information, and they could push that decision to Edge gateways and eventually to Edge devices to recalibrate the infrastructure, and we’ll see that in a bit.

Okay, so Edge devices, these are physical devices or sensors that produce, collect, and process data locally. These devices include smartphones, laptops, cameras, IoT devices, industrial equipment, robots, drones, or autonomous vehicles. They have built-in processing capabilities that enable them to perform basic data analysis and filtering before sending data to the next stage or the Edge computer architecture. So basically, what you want is to reduce the amount of data transmitted and minimize data, so pushing compute capabilities to the edge helps with this.

Edge Gateway, this is an optional component of Edge Computing, although a key component, but it depends on your deployment. If there’s a large number of sensors within that area, an Edge Gateway would be the way to go. For example, an Edge Gateway could be a CDN. The Edge Gateway could have more power, as most of our Edge devices would be operating on a limited capacity, especially wireless or off the grid but battery operated. Edge Gateways are typically powered near sensors, so they would have a boost in compute resources. So all of these sensors and IoT would be sending information to the Edge Gateway, and the Edge Gateway would pre-compute or perform secondary computation or processing.

I mean, the IoT is already pre-processing data, but it may need regional or local views. The Edge Gateway, within a short geographical distance from its location, would pre-process that and then submit that to the Cloud environment. Edge Gateway components also include additional functionalities like compute power, protocol translation, data caching, some security features, and local storage. If you’re, let’s say, sensing via video for computer vision, you might not want to submit all that data to the cloud for processing, as that would take a lot of bandwidth and storage. You could send it to the Edge Gateway, and the Edge Gateway would pre-process it. Anomalies or data out of scope could trigger an alarm, but you wouldn’t need to have the full video feed sent to the cloud.

This makes it more efficient, of course, not always, but sometimes. Edge applications may require more computing resources available to the device itself; again, some would be battery operated. When you design an infrastructure like this one, you compute for battery consumption. Let’s say, battery-operated solar; you want that battery to be charged in the morning and then used, and then maybe have enough capacity that would last you through the night until you recharge or maybe have a two-day cycle with enough battery for that in case of any issues. What affects those battery usage, of course, is computing. Data processing, security also, encryption is heavy on math. I’ve seen OT environments where they are forgoing encryption because they need it to be responsive. Security adds a bit of latency, but they need it to be responsive and they need to conserve battery.

They often opt to not encrypt some information, so there may be an issue with security and then just submit it to an Edge Gateway, and then that Edge Gateway would be the one that’s secure enough to talk to the servers for telemetry data. Of course, we have Edge data centers. These are localized smaller scale data centers, basically, if you could just imagine from an Edge device to an Edge Gateway to an Edge data center. Again, you’re trying to process the data as near to the source as possible. This is still within a local geographical region near your sensors, likely talking from the end devices, Edge Gateway for processing, but for some other processing requirement and link with cloud computing, you still need cloud computing to centralize Edge Computing infrastructure. Again, Edge Computing is there to support and augment your lack of processing power.

So, you would be, again, you’d go old school, send the data to the cloud and have it processed. It’s not working for large scale deployment nodes; it’s going to be very costly for you. But you would also consider Edge device costs per page. So, you need to mix and match, but at some point, it’s really time sensitivity of the task, no cost, or otherwise computing need. Compute power is there, or you could really process in the cloud. Cloud would have latency, see Edge device compute it there, minimal latency on its own. So, benefit, that’s one of the non-negotiables when to use Edge Computing, you need low latency. And again, in some scenarios, that may be a non-negotiable. So, benefit, that’s one of the non-negotiables when to use Edge Computing, you need low latency. And again, in some scenarios, that may be a non-negotiable.

But yeah, again, Edge Computing, though a view would be on their own environment, that not that said, they could get feedback from Edge data centers and Edge Gateways, and any information that they have, if it’s required within the system, they would submit those Telemetry data to the centralized, most likely via Cloud, environment.

The Edge layer is responsible for collecting and processing data from multiple Edge devices in real-time. This layer consists of more powerful Edge devices, such as gateways or Edge servers, that are capable of processing and analyzing data from multiple sources simultaneously. They act as a bridge between the device layer and the cloud layer.

The cloud layer consists of remote servers and data centers that provide storage and processing capabilities for large amounts of data. The data collected and processed by the Edge layer is sent to the cloud for further analysis and storage. The cloud layer can also provide more advanced processing capabilities, such as machine learning and artificial intelligence, that may not be possible on individual Edge devices.

Centralized Data Centers:
You all must be aware of what your data base is, organized as a collection of data. With support from an educational institute, if there are three courses running – Amba B.A. and B.Com – then the data of those students who are stressing in all three processes, what all files have you created from their data and stored in the director’s office? Now, if the faculty is an apk file or a village’s faculty, if their restaurant details are extracted, where will they go? They’ll go to the director’s office, open solutions there, and if they want spicy details, they’ll take them. Such types of data base systems are called centralized data base systems.

Centralized data base system is a single file, placed in one location, and as many people as there are cancer patients, they go there and access the data from there. So, in these centralized databases, there is a single data base file in a single location in any network, and there will be a single database file placed on any probation, so what will you do with it?

In centralized data base system, multiple users can access a single battery-saving data. One single data can be accessed by multiple users, like there is a file containing details of three courses’ students, so the faculty and multiple users can access it. This type of system is a single database file; it’s easier to get a complete view of the data. Here, what happens is that there’s a single file, and you get a complete view of the data. You can get the total count of how many students are studying in that university, how many banks, how many wives you have, you can get all that information there. It’s easier to manage, update, and take backup of the data here, and it’s easy to manage the data, update it, or take a backup of it.

On the other hand, there’s one more difficulty with it. In such a system, a single database file is used by multiple users, with the same data base file, so it becomes difficult. That means there will be a lot of requests for a single file, it will lead to a war, but what will happen is that somewhere or the other, its speed will slow down, the speed that leads to productivity will decrease. When the speed decreases, productivity decreases, as you have seen when you want to fill out an online form, and when many people go to the same website to fill out the form, what happens is that the website goes down, the server goes down, because many people go there. That means when you determine the exam, it will increase, so you won’t tell them to perform, it will stop performing.

Similarly, when results come out, you’ll see that the server goes down, people can’t see their results, they get to see them one day later or two days later because it’s searched, many people start seeing the result together, so in one place, there’s a problem in the database, it’s shared, and when many people try to access the database from there, the server goes down. Nowadays, what happens is that it takes two or three days for the result to come out on time. It takes two or three, but they say that it’s a distributed database system, meaning that everyone’s marksheet is kept in different databases, so it can be seen from where you want to see it. So first, what happens is that a link is given, so to check the result, you’ll get a centralized data booster, what will you do, and nothing will be given. How Fingerprint Recognition Works

Majorly, three biometric behaviors are used for identification: fingerprint, iris, and face. Fingerprint recognition is the widely adopted biometrics technology for identification. Let’s check out how fingerprint recognition is done in our biometric devices.

The first step involves fingerprint template formation, which is also called minutia extraction. When the original fingerprint is extracted from the optical sensor, a monochrome image of the fingerprint is formed in 8-bit grayscale. The 8-bit grayscale is converted into zeros and ones depending on the nearby pixels. This is done with the help of an algorithm. After getting the grayscale image of the original fingerprint, a fur filter converts the image into a single thin line, resulting in a sharp image. The final image formed is the desired fingerprint template, which is an array of 240×320 pixels in the range of 200 to 500 bytes.

Now, a user only needs to make quick eye contact with the infrared camera whenever he or she needs authentication.

How will iris recognition technology be used moving forward? Iris recognition technology has actually been in the news and fields that require a high level of security. Now, it can be popularized for broader applications where an authentication process is necessary. Similarly, this machinery performs a similar task. It looks at what it has captured and turns that sound into a picture, often represented as graphs and waves. It then compares this picture with the recorded known pictures, asking, “Does this look the same?” For example, when someone says “two,” does it look the same as when we recorded her saying “two” the first time? This comparison results in a confidence level, ranging from 0% to 100%. This confidence level determines whether it’s a match or not, which is then indicated by a green, yellow, or red acknowledgment. If it’s not a match, no details on the person are provided.

Behavioral Biometrics:

Behavioral biometrics is a type of biometrics that analyzes how a user or a device behaves rather than what they are. It is more secure, convenient, and adaptable than other methods of authentication on smart devices. There are different technologies and algorithms that can use behavioral biometric data on smart devices. For example, keystroke dynamics measures how a user types on a keyboard or a touchscreen. Touchscreen dynamics measures how a user touches, swipes, taps, or scrolls on a touchscreen device.

Motion analysis measures how a user holds, moves, or shakes their smart device. Network analysis measures how a device connects, communicates, or interacts with other devices or networks. These technologies can identify a user or a device based on their unique patterns and characteristics, such as typing speed, finger size, hand posture, IP address, and so on. Behavioral biometrics can provide a more reliable, convenient, and flexible way to authenticate users or devices on smart devices compared to other methods.

Applications and Characteristics of Biometrics

We’ve explored the diverse realms biometrics can permeate and the applications spanning from commercial to forensic. We delved into how biometrics is widely used and its various definitions, as well as performance measures. Now, let’s focus on the main applications of biometrics. By application, I mean utilizing a person’s biometric data to authenticate various processes. This could involve tasks such as phone unlocking, making internet transactions, or verifying a person’s identity. All these tasks involve the use of biometric data. Currently, we might not have this in every scenario, but in the future, it’s inevitable due to the encryption and security biometric data offers. The applications can be classified under three main categories: commercial, government, and forensic.

Commercial applications mostly entail electronic data security, e-commerce, internet access, ATM usage, credit card transactions (often using fingerprints), mobile phone and laptop unlocking, among others. Government applications include nationalized ID cards, PAN cards, and driving licenses, where fingerprints are commonly used for enrollment and verification. Forensic applications involve analyzing evidence such as bloodstains, DNA tests, and identifying individuals from a single strand of hair. These applications are categorized into commercial, government, and forensic sectors. Each sector has its specific requirements and uses for biometric data.

For instance, in Tamil Nadu, we have a biometric system to verify ration cardholders’ identities. During the COVID-19 pandemic, fingerprint scans were used for certain government reforms. These are classic examples of government biometric applications. There are numerous such cases, and to learn more, you can refer to the materials provided in this book.

Moving on to biometric characteristics, these define the uniqueness of a biometric system. Characteristics such as universality, uniqueness, permanence, measurability, performance, acceptability, and circumvention play crucial roles in determining the effectiveness of a biometric system. No single biometric trait can effectively meet all requirements. Each has its strengths and limitations. For example, while iris scans are universal for most individuals, they may not be usable for visually impaired people. Similarly, while fingerprints are unique and permanent, they may not be suitable for individuals without limbs.

Therefore, it’s essential to understand that no single biometric trait is ideal for all scenarios, but a combination of them can be effective. This concludes the first part of our session on biometrics, covering its applications and characteristics.

My fingerprint, my face, the way I move — all of these can be turned into unique biometrics and used to identify me. For example, for making online payments. But how secure is this technology really?

Once, on shift when I wait at a bar, a system registers my face and lets the barman know which customer is next in line. I’ve never found my face more useful. I use my fingerprint to unlock my phone and to gain access to this high-security area. A computer first needs to scan my body movements. Biometrics are increasingly replacing typical passwords and access keys. For example, biometric systems can recognize a person’s specific physical attributes, such as their fingerprints, facial features, iris, or retina. The technology is already used around the world by the Somali army, Indian doctors, and for authenticating patients for important drugs, or for online banking on smartphones. There are even systems that look under your skin, so to speak, such as infrared scanners that are used in vein matching. Oxygen-poor blood in veins absorbs more infrared light than surrounding tissue, so vein patterns can be matched.

Scientists are currently developing technology that can recognize a person based on their heartbeat. Others are working on identifying a person by their brainwaves. Sounds like biometrics are super practical. I no longer need those endless letter, number, and character password combinations — happy days! Or is there a catch? We talked to Professor Christophe Miner to find out. He teaches internet technologies and systems at a post-stem-based Research Institute.

“What’s more secure, Professor — passwords or biometrics? Using your fingerprint to login is obviously more convenient. You just put your finger on the reader or identify it, and then you’re in. That’s much easier than typing a password. Passwords are often weak and a little out of date, but password-protected systems are easy to implement. That’s probably why they’re so common. That’s a cost issue. The more sensors I can use to scan a fingerprint or face, the more accurately I can capture someone’s biometric profile. As for the security of this technology, it depends on how well it’s implemented. If there are enough sensors, this is more secure than passwords.”

Swishing your skin, swishing finger up, talking iris recognition, fingerprint scans, and facial recognition are similar in the sense that they all check for a single constant biometric feature by which the system recognizes me. A password, by contrast, is something I need to memorize. I shouldn’t write it down anywhere because otherwise, anyone who finds it can pretend to be me. The future is multi-factor authentication, or at least two-factor authentication, and I think that ultimately, the most user-friendly systems will be the ones used the most.

So, biometric identification is convenient, but is our personal data safe? Companies using this tech have to ensure that biometric data is securely stored and encrypted, ideally on end-user devices and not in some cloud. This makes it harder for hackers to access. Unfortunately, that’s not always done. A team of Israeli researchers managed to hack into a 23 gigabyte database with over 27 million records containing fingerprints, facial profiles, and much more. But of course, password databases have also been compromised.

Beyond large-scale hacks, there’s also a risk of individual systems and devices being cracked. And I’m a bit worried about how successful hackers have been at outwitting biometrics. A password can be stolen; someone can watch you enter it somewhere or find where you wrote it down, or even just guess it. This can’t happen with biometric identification tech. Biometrics are convenient and save users from having to remember passwords, but unlike passwords, you can’t change your biometric data if it’s been hacked. And under lab conditions, hackers have managed to outsmart biometric encryption technologies. For instance, they duped an iPhone fingerprint scanner using a fingerprint they’d lifted from a glass.

And combining a picture of a person’s iris with a contact lens got them past a Samsung phone iris scanner. Hackers from Germany’s Chaos Computer Club have developed a wax hand that fooled a palm vein scanner. And Chinese hackers spoofed Apple’s Face ID liveness detection technology with just a pair of glasses and some tape. We should stress all these hacks were carried out under lab conditions. The quality of a system’s sensors largely determines how safe it is, which means smartphones are easier to outwit than elaborate security systems.

Clearly, biometrics aren’t as safe as you might think. Even though a scenario like taking a fake wax hand along to break into a high-security area isn’t very realistic either. Still, many tech companies keep rolling out biometric security features. The latest Apple and Google smartphones, for example, let you make payments using facial recognition tech. Pretty convenient. But is my personal data safe with these companies? And what if companies or states get too nosy? In Great Britain, CCTV cameras are ubiquitous. The average Londoner is caught on camera 300 times every day. What if facial recognition technology were applied to analyze that CCTV footage? Surveillance cameras are widespread in Britain, and London has been called Europe’s CCTV capital. People have even begun using them independently of the authorities.

“Because you can go on Facebook now, get people’s profile images, and as easy as that, upload them onto your own software. Criminals, etc., in the area, please upload their images all over the online, and you can pick up them images, add them to your security system. When the person crosses your cameras, your system picks it up. So it’s as easy as that.” Not easy, perhaps, but it’s also an invasion of privacy. In Britain, many are used to CCTV cameras, but since authorities have started combining surveillance cameras with facial recognition tech, some say this goes too far. People like Edie Bridges from Cardiff, who recently made a shocking discovery.

“The van was parked just around the corner, and by the time I was close enough to see ‘facial recognition technology’ written on the van, it had already captured my data several times over. And that felt like an invasion of my privacy. I’m a law-abiding member of the public. I was going about my daily business. I wasn’t committing any crime. I was no threat to anyone. And yet, the police were there, filming me and capturing my data.” Essentially, Bridges took the Welsh Police to court and lost. He’s currently appealing that ruling, but for now, police continue to use their tech, scanning hundreds of faces per second, checking them against wanted lists.

“We are learning, we are developing, and there are actually people being taken off the streets who are wanted for offenses or harm to the public as a direct result of the deployment of this technology.” The question remains whether the ends really justify the means. If you ask me, we should all be wary of handing out our biometric data. I wonder if the convenience outweighs the potential risks. Researchers are already working on so-called cancel biometrics. Here, the biometric data is encrypted before it’s stored. In a nutshell, this means that not my actual face is stored, but a digitally altered version. If anyone hacks the system, I can delete my data and create a new biometric password. That sounds pretty good.

Border Control:
The integration of biometrics into the travel sphere is changing the landscape of travel. Many countries now require facial and fingerprint scanning for visa applications, while airports like Dubai have introduced face and iris scanners as alternatives to passport verification. Biometric fusion provides valuable information, such as the traveler’s criminal history and protection status, enhancing security and protecting individuals from identity theft.

In the current scenario where tourist activities are rebounding, digital travel solutions are crucial. Biometrics makes our lives easier and helps us get things done faster. We can unlock our phone using our facial structure, log in to our bank accounts and emails using our fingerprint, and control our electronic devices such as phones, TVs, and computers with our voice. Another benefit biometric technology provides is security. Today’s biometric authentication is generally more secure than traditional passwords because every individual has their own unique characteristics, and data cannot be guessed or stolen in the same fashion as a traditional password.

For example, the Tampa Police Department used facial recognition technology during the 2001 Super Bowl game, compiling images of over 100,000 attendees via CCTV images, and compared them back to the police database. Here’s another example: in 2017, Six Flags was sued because they failed to provide a written disclosure that they were scanning and collecting fingerprints from park visitors and distributing gathered biometric information to other sources. The court dismissed the case because nobody experienced any harmful effects from that incident.

Moreover, the violation of privacy could also occur in the workplace when employers track their employees’ biometric data to see if they are being productive or not. For instance, if the pupil size or vital signs are being tracked at work, the result might indicate that the employee is more or less productive. However, what if the employee is wearing glasses, which make it harder for the sensor to see the eyes, or the employee has a medical condition that lowers or increases their blood pressure? Lower blood pressure means they are not working, while higher blood pressure means they are working really hard. Are they going to be fired or get a negative performance review just because their biometrics aren’t what’s expected? I think that’s a big issue.

Secondly, accessibility poses a challenge. How will the population with disabilities be enrolled or authenticated in biometric databases? People with only one hand, no iris or retina, no fingers, burnt fingerprints, or mute individuals may suffer discrimination and unnecessary delays in biometric systems.

Thirdly, racial bias is a concern. A study organized by the U.S. government in 2002 showed that the identification rate for males was six to nine percent higher than females, and the recognition rate for older people was higher than for younger people. Furthermore, the study found that Asians, African Americans, and other races are easier to recognize than Caucasians. There is no easy way to program a biometric system to not recognize an authentic user’s legitimate biometrics if hackers get a hold of your biometric data; they’ll be able to use it wherever, whenever, and however they want.

With that being said, I would recommend mandating a substantial number of ethics courses for students pursuing engineering, programming, computer science, and any degree involving technology. Also, I recommend implementing the Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) nationwide to protect our biometric information. If all states have strict BIPA regulations in place, it will lead to fewer privacy and security issues. Moreover, transparency about biometric technology helps workplaces operate and maintain a healthy environment during difficult times. First, make sure you are working with a provider that you trust. Second, be transparent with your employees about why you are using technology and collecting their specific data.

If the data is creating a safer work environment, then employees will be understanding and try their best to help. One way to address concerns is to be transparent with employees about why you are implementing technology, what you will do with it, and how the data will be used. Finally, ensure technicians receive appropriate education and training. Most biometric technicians are trained on-site by the vendor’s personnel. Typical activities of these technicians include collecting samples for enrollment, using complex sensors, authenticating identity documents of individuals before enrolling them, maintaining the biometric facility under proper conditions, following maintenance protocols correctly, and judging the quality of the samples collected.
